Today was very emotional. First, the incident with Ashley, the argument with Clusseaud, Raven putting his foot down and then claiming me. Now, this huge check! It’s too much and rivers of my tears are rolling down my cheeks, as I wave the check in the air to Carl. I’m sure he’s watching and smiling.

The amount raised is unbelievable. I’m glad we split the fundraising between two organizations. The children deserve as much of a leg up as cancer patients do.

The promise auction is about to start as we leave the stage, handing the microphone over to Ally, who steps up with a grin. That should have been our warning.

“Right, folks, the promise auction. If you have never been to one before, let me tell you how this works. Club members of both clubs, friends of both clubs, and members of the public have donated promises, which we will now auction off. Please bid and give generously.”

“First item in our long list is: leaf raking, promised by twelve-year-old Jonah. He will come to your yard and rake your leaves for you.”

“Ten dollars!” someone in the crowd shouts out, swiftly followed by “twenty”; the bidding goes on and the prize eventually goes to a woman for thirty-five dollars.

“Item two,” Ally’s voice rings out. “I promise to deliver cakes and pies to the value of a hundred dollars to the highest bidder!” That one goes for two hundred dollars. “Item three, a car wash by club member Moggy. Topless!” Ally screeches into the microphone. Moggy’s face is priceless. I don’t think he knew about the topless bit. All the women go crazy trying to outbid each other. Moggy’s promise sells for one hundred and fifty dollars! Not bad.

“Item four, a bike service by Ratchet and Sparks from Stormy Souls Customs!”

“Two hundred dollars to do it topless!” Caroline shouts from the side of the stage. Sparks and Ratchet both look scared, shaking their heads vigorously, but Ally’s evil grin means she will not let them off the hook.

“Two fifty, topless!” Greta, one of the Pixies, shouts.

“Three hundred if you promise to take pictures and hang them in the clubhouse!” Ashley shouts. Vegas is falling over laughing.

“SOLD!” yells Ally. “Three hundred dollars to the lady over there and pictures for the clubhouse!”

The auction carries on. Local businesses pledged a lot of items. Children also got into the spirit, like Jonah. The Scout Troop promised to pick up litter, the Forestry Commission pledged logs for firepits and chimneys. So many things. At the end, Ally, laughing and a little out of breath, watches as Spen walks up to her with a note revealing the total.

“Okay, folks, here is the total of the auction: With your generosity, we raised eight thousand three hundred seventy-six dollars for Rainbow House!” The applause is deafening.

Spen steps up to the microphone. “Could I ask Ashley and Sarah to come up here, please?” As they both make their way up to the stage, Dawg appears with another presentation check.
